Get Help For Gum Disease in Ashburn

Wondering if you have periodontal disease? Periodontal (gum) disease affects nearly half of all American adults, and many people are not even aware that they have it.

Some common early signs of gum disease can include swollen, puffy, inflamed, bleeding, or discolored gums. As bacteria attack your gums, they tend to react by swelling and becoming thicker which can lead to more noticeable symptoms like bleeding, even when not brushing, and becoming discolored.

Contact us now, and get the help you need for healthy gums at Dulles Life Smiles.

What Is Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, refers to the infection of your gums by oral bacteria. This disease is caused by improper oral hygiene. If you do not brush and floss properly, oral bacteria will build up and multiply in your mouth.

Over time, these bacteria will build up between your gums and teeth, forming plaque and tartar. The bacteria in plaque and tartar will attack and infect your gums, causing inflammation. Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause permanent damage to your gums, and the supporting structures of your teeth.

The Stages of Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, and it’s characterized by minor symptoms like gum inflammation and discoloration, bleeding when brushing, and halitosis (bad breath). When treated in time, it’s reversible and causes no damage to your gums or teeth.

The second stage of periodontal disease is called “periodontitis.” Common symptoms of this stage of gum disease include gum recession, pain and discomfort when chewing, and gaps between your gums and teeth. This stage of gum disease is not reversible. However, it can be controlled with proper dental care, and any further damage to your teeth and gums can be prevented.

Advanced periodontitis is the third and final stage of periodontal disease. In this stage of the disease, serious and permanent damage has been done to your teeth and gums. Symptoms of this stage of gum disease include teeth shifting, a foul taste in your mouth, the formation of pus between your teeth and gums, and tooth loss. Surgery may be required to restore your oral health, or it may be necessary to extract your teeth and replace them with dentures or dental implants.

Periodontal Treatment

At Dulles Life Smiles, Dr. Gino offers a full range of periodontal treatment to help fight back against gum disease, and halt or reverse the progression of gum disease. The first step of periodontal treatment is typically a deep cleaning (scaling & root planing).

In this procedure, half of your mouth is cleaned at each appointment. Dr. Gino will use a variety of special dental tools to scrape plaque, tartar, and bacteria away from your teeth and gums, and to smooth the roots of your gums to eliminate pockets of bacteria.

When combined with antibiotic treatment, this is usually enough to treat most cases of gum disease. Some patients may require more than one deep cleaning, and patients with extensive gum disease may require further surgical intervention, such as gum flap surgery to clean the roots of their teeth.
